Watching God At Work

“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)

As I peered at the monitor and watched the baby within my daughter’s womb move around during her latest ultrasound appointment the other day, I was spellbound. While the baby stretched out her little legs and showed off her hands and feet, I imagined that God was whispering to her, “Okay now baby, it’s time to test the joints in your legs and your feet. Move them around so we can make sure that they’re just right.”

When I saw her yawn, it was the most precious thing in the world to me. Being allowed to watch God work is such a priceless gift.

I was overflowing with joy as I looked at the expression on my daughter’s face while she watched the baby move around and commented saying, “Oh,” and “How cute!” Soon, I will have the privilege of seeing my daughter love another as much as I love her, and that doesn’t begin to come close to the love that God has for each one of us.

As it says in Job 31:15, God Himself formed each of us in our mother’s wombs. God made every one of us just right. Regardless of whether we have deformities or other things wrong with us, we’re made the way that pleases the Lord the most. Psalm 127:3 says: “Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.” (NIV) How much more of a reward are grandchildren?

* Copyright 2008 Sandra Purdue. This devotional was written months before my granddaughter was born. When I went to one of my daughter's OB appointments, I had the privilege of peeking over the ultrasound technician's shoulder and was so awed that when I got home, I wrote the above devotional.
