Happiness is contagious. As they say, a smile goes a long way. The same is true when we have a joyful attitude. But how do we have a joyful mind-set when it seems like everything imaginable is going wrong?
By having a grateful heart.
A grateful heart can make all the difference in the world; it all depends upon our perspective. See, what we choose to allow ourselves to think about will always make the difference between having a great day and a terrible day.
Not only does our attitude affect ourselves, but it also affects everyone around us. Colossians 3:8 tells us to watch our mouths. What’s more, Jesus said that whatever is in our hearts will always pour out of our mouths.
I’ll be the first one to say that life is hard. What with the cranky arthritis in my neck, low back and hip and a sixteen-year-old son who is typical of kids his age, I can go on and on bitterly complaining all day to anyone who will listen. But if I do that, not only will I be dedicating my thoughts to the evils of the day (where they shouldn’t ever be) but I’ll be ruining someone else’s day. People have enough problems of their own without having to deal with my problems too.
But by shifting my focus, by thinking about God’s goodness, by thinking of at least one good thing that He’s done for me today, I’ll have a reason to smile. When I tell someone else about what God has done, that person will be happy for me, and they’ll think about God and His greatness too. Trust me, the stoniest of hearts soften up when they think about how good God is.
Can't think of anything to be grateful for? Admittedly, in the past, I was so
bent on the negatives in my life that I simply forgot to be satisfied with what
God has given me. Here are some questions that I've learned to ask myself
whenever I need a reminder to be grateful for at least one thing each day: Did I
eat today? Did I have a warm, dry place to sleep last night? Do I have a washer
and dryer to clean my clothes with? As you can see, there are a multitude of
things we can be grateful for, we just have to find something, anything at all
to be glad about.
Let’s take this a bit further: Since we know how our attitude affects others around us, we should also know that a smile or a kind word can be the difference between making and breaking another person’s day. By telling at least one other person to have a great day or evening, as the case may be, and remembering to say “Thank you!” to someone who has done something for us, we’ll not only have an attitude of gratitude, but we’ll spread happiness faster than the common cold.
