As children of God, we are but a tiny reflection of Him. The love we show others reflects the love we constantly receive from God.
But, that’s not always true, is it?
Being only human, things like strife, worry, doubts, health problems, a death in the family, and a whole host of other things which can knock a person down spiritually, mentally and physically not only shows outwardly in the things we do—or our actions, or lack of, such as neglecting to hug someone when we normally do, but our inward condition almost always shows in our facial expressions… how we forget to smile at another, look him or her in the eye, look at him or her with concern, listen fully to what he or she is saying. If we’re not careful, we can come across as being cold and indifferent, which is not how the Lord wants us to be.
In 1 Corinthians 13:13, Paul said, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” And in Matthew 22:39, Jesus said that the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself.
But how can we do that when the world is full of ugliness?
Not only must we be childlike in our faith, but we also must be childlike in the love we give others. Watch how a small child loves. It’s unconditional. His or her love is given freely; unconditionally, with nothing held back. No matter what, that child loves others without expecting anything in return. That’s the way God loves us. And He doesn’t expect anything but our love in return. We need to be that way towards others. If we can do that, then we’ll love others like God loves them. We’ll love them like God wants us to love others.
It doesn’t take much to show someone that you care. You can give someone a glimpse of Christ by saying something kind to him or her, by helping him or her tackle a difficult task, or even by just being there when he or she is facing hardships. Remember: The love we show others is only a small reflection of the love that God has for us, but it’s enough to uplift someone who may be facing difficulties. It’s enough to allow that person a glimpse of the love that God has for him or her.
If we make a decision right now to refuse to allow the world to take away our joy, our deeply rooted joy that we have found by knowing that we’re dearly loved by Christ Jesus, then we will reflect that joy, love and peace outwardly towards others. If we can be constantly mindful of the love that God has shown us then we can let others who don’t know the Lord see the love of Christ through us. And that’s always a good thing.
