“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV) I love that verse. It sings to me and soothes my soul every time I read it.
As a Christian, I am constantly striving to have a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. The last thing I want is to have my relationship with my maker hindered in any way—especially by anything offensive inside of me. Nevertheless, I, like every other human being out there, do things that rub God the wrong way. However unintentional those transgressions may be, they are still there.
And, being only human, I try to become independent from God by holding small parts of my life or pieces of myself away from Him. While I’m trying to fix my life or
fix myself by myself, without realizing it, I’m pushing God back; I’m telling Him that I think I can take care of everything myself. However by doing so, I’m being self-reliant; not God-reliant like I’m supposed to be. All of us do it at one time or another, actually, but that kind of thinking is dangerous because as we’re
traveling along the road to eternity, we inevitably trip over something that was unseen by us.
While we’re tripping and stumbling up the road, we’re wondering why God isn’t close to us anymore. We’re questioning Him as to the reason why He won’t answer us. Soon enough, we become disillusioned with God when really the problem lies within ourselves: We just don’t want to see it.
Bearing in mind that God sees the obstacles before us even though we can’t, when we
apply Psalm 139:23-24 to our own lives we'll avoid stumbling over anything along the way
to the Promised Land. By giving everything to God and asking Him to search us through and through, to look deep inside our hearts, our minds, and our souls and test us and then lovingly expose any iniquity within us,
we're telling God that we trust Him to make any changes that need to be made within us.
We're telling Him that we trust Him to navigate the way to the Promised Land, the place that every believer dreams of entering into.
