Six Things A Christian Can Do To Immediately Begin To
Grow Spiritually
As Christians, how do we arrive at a time in our lives when we say, “Aha! Now I see!”? How do we have those breakthrough moments when we’re certain that we’ve experienced true spiritual growth?
In this article, I have listed six things that we can start doing to
immediately experience spiritual growth. Not only that, but if we continue to do those things consistently, then we’re guaranteed to
keep growing spiritually. And when we grow spiritually, we’ll naturally walk closer to the Lord.
Spending one-on-one time with God is a big way we can grow spiritually.
We can do this through prayer, not necessarily doing all the talking either. If
we're still and we're listening for God's still, small voice, we'll hear Him.
By reading His Word, by increasing our knowledge of the Lord, and then applying it to our lives, we’ll be like a well tended plant that has grown to become luxuriant and vibrant with health. If we take the time to get to know the Lord personally, we’ll pulsate with so much life that others can’t help but notice that we’ve grown spiritually. If you pray and ask the Lord to open your eyes and heart to the truth before you begin to study the Bible, the Holy Spirit will teach you things about God that you never realized. One of my favorite verses regarding this is in Job 32:8 where it says: “But it is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding.” No matter how young or old you happen to be, God is always willing to take the time to teach you about Himself. All you have to do is seek His face.
As I’ve said before, if your life is hectic, do what I do. Take your Bible with you into the bathroom and either close the lid on the toilet or read it while your soaking in the bathtub. If your family values privacy, only the most daring will disturb you in there. Other people awaken early in order to get their “face time” with God. Still others stay awake in order to have that precious time with the Lord. During your alone times with God, as God is teaching you about Himself, you’ll experience spiritual growth.
Doing our best not to sin, by turning away from temptation, by slamming the door shut on Satan, not only will we experience true spiritual growth, but we’ll also grow stronger in the Lord. Just like when Adam and Eve hid themselves when they realized that they sinned, we tend to do the same thing. The entire time that we’re trying to conceal our sin, we’re avoiding God, which will cause us to experience a setback spiritually. Conversely, if you do sin, take that sin to the Lord, tell Him about it and do your darndest to never do it again.
If we’re walking in the Spirit we’ll grow spiritually. But we can’t walk in the Spirit with just our minds, we have to be in step with the Holy Spirit in our hearts, minds, and spirits. When we’re walking in the Spirit, we’re automatically attuned to the Spirit of God. While we’re walking in the Spirit, we’re listening to Him and doing what He’s leading us to do without question, without hesitation. As we’re obeying Him, even though our minds are telling us that what He wants us to do makes no sense, we’re telling our minds, our intellect, to sit in the back seat and shut up.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that all scripture comes from the mouth of God. Not only must we believe in God, but we must believe everything He says and apply it to our everyday lives. God commanded Moses and the other authors of the books within the Bible to write those books so that we would have a way to learn about God. Without it, all of us would be lost. Because all of God’s Word is the truth, if we’re doing our best to measure up to what God expects of us, we can’t help but grow spiritually.
On the other hand, if we’re not applying God’s Word to our lives every day, and we’re not willing to believe that the entire Bible is the true Word of God, then our growth will be stymied and we’ll become like the slime on the surface of a stagnant pool or water. Yuck!
And lastly, through experience, as we learn that we really can put all of our faith and trust in God, and that not only do God’s promises pertain to the men and women of the Biblical times, but it also applies to us who are living in the here and now, we’ll grow spiritually.
