In John 17:20-25, Jesus prayed that we would be as close to Him as He is with our Heavenly Father. If we want to have an intimate relationship that makes us one with Him, if we want to be as close to Him as Jesus is, then we have to allow Him see and know everything within us.
Well—that’s a given for all believers, right? Well, no. Some of us, old and
young, mature and immature in Christ, try to hide certain parts of ourselves from God—especially the sinful or not so good parts.
“Well, why would anyone bother to hide anything from God?” you may be asking.
Simply put, it’s because of our fear of rejection. We tend to think that our maker will just turn around and walk away from us if we’re not perfect.
We do the same thing when we start dating someone; we put our very best foot forward in the beginning of the relationship. We hide the fact that we pig out at the dinner table so much that we have to unbutton the top button of our pants to accommodate our bloated bellies—at least until the third date or so.
If the person we just started dating shows up at our house unexpectedly, we wouldn’t dare answer the door in our favorite pair of flannel pajamas that are so old and faded that it’s just a matter of time before they fall apart in the washing machine. No. We scramble to put on something presentable and brush our hair. What if he or she never came back or called us again after seeing what we really look like while in the comfort of our own homes?
But when we expect God to act like we humans do, when we expect Him to only love us as much as our expectations warrant, we’re telling Him that we doubt His love for us when really, God’s love for us knows no bounds. We’re like a mirror: The love that we allow ourselves to feel from God is always reflected outward towards other people.
We can’t be double minded. We can’t say with our mouths that we believe Him and then harbor mistrust for Him and His intentions toward us in our hearts. In order to make this relationship between God and us work, we have to open ourselves up to Him; we have to be willing to let Him know us intimately.
Listen: We humans can barely remember what we had for lunch three days ago, and we certainly don’t have the ability to make the heavens and the earth like God can. God knows all of our days—past present and future; He knows every step we’ll take in our lives; He knows how many hairs we have on our heads; He knows every thought we’ll ever have. And despite knowing all of that, He lovingly made each one of us inside our mother’s wombs and watches over us every second of every day, always making sure that we have what we need.
Which one of us would die for someone who will only reject us in the end? None of us. I certainly wouldn’t. But God did the unthinkable for everyone. His love for us knows no limits.
So whenever the enemy creeps into your heart and tries to strangle your relationship with the Lord by planting doubts about God’s love for you because you’re not perfect, or because you made a mistake of some sort, remind yourself that God loves you warts and all: He always has and He always will.
Having the confidence that God loves you no matter what will shave a lot of time off your journey into the Promised Land, the land that every believer desires to enter into, which is the state of surety that you are one with the Lord, having the full confidence that you will be with Him forevermore after you die.
Traveling there will be a lot easier too.
In order to get to the Promised Land though, you have to let go of your fear of rejection which will only put up a brick wall between you and God; it will hinder that intimate relationship between God and yourself that you, and God desires.
