Why did
God allow His Son to die such a horrible death?
"Why did Jesus have to die?" is a popular question. In the following article, I'll explain why Jesus had to die for our sins.
In the beginning, God created human beings in His image: we were sinless and pure. Genesis 2 tells us that
Adam and Eve weren't ashamed to run around buck naked and everything was good.
However, we read in Genesis 3 that Adam told God: “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
Did you catch that?
Once Adam realized that he had sinned, he was so ashamed that he tried to hide from God.
Not only that, but when God called Adam and Eve into account, they failed to take personal responsibility for their
actions, making true repentance impossible. Following that, God put a barrier between Himself and humans
when He made clothing of skin for Adam and Eve.
Since then, the human race has rebelled against God in one fashion or another.
Our own impure hearts have kept us separated from God. Psalm 58:3 tells us, “The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.” By quoting the above verses, I’m not saying that babies sin, I’m pointing out the fact that
all of our actions, good or bad, are tainted with evil; one selfish motive or
another is behind every good thing that we do.
Because all of us stand guilty of being sinners, the wrath of God is upon us
all. For this reason, He required a blood sacrifice to blot out our sins; however,
in short order, our sacrifices became perfunctory. And since God can not stand the truly unrepentant,
He required much more.
Imagine that someone intentionally smacked you upside the head and then mechanically said, “Oh, sorry,” and then did it again moments later. Suppose that he or she did it a hundred times a day. Would you believe that
his or her apologies are sincere? In the same way, if we were not truly repentant then we displease God.
In order to do away with the obligatory sacrifices, which are meaningless, God
came into this world to be the ultimate sacrifice for all of our sins,
past, present, and future. On our behalf, Christ Jesus, who is God, satisfied the righteous anger of God by taking the punishment that we deserve so that we could become God’s children
and have daily communion with Him like He intended.
